Who is Madi?

Picture
Madison Rhoades (Orgill), also known as Madi, lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She graduated the University of Southern California in 2013 with a BA in Fine Arts and a Theatre Arts minor. She has found set design and scenic painting to be the perfect mixture between her love for both art and theatre.
With a passion for Halloween, Madi became the lead scenic painter for the
Queen Mary's Dark Harbor and year-round tour Ghosts & Legends of the Queen Mary since 2013. She also had the opportunity to worked on the famous Haunted Play's Delusion  since it first began in 2011. Madi is a skilled scenic artist and specializes in horror scenic painting.
She also uses horror elements in her set designs and had the oppertunity to design the world premiere of Night Hawks produced by Crown City Theatre, The Theatrician's Kimberly Akimbo and returned to design Mr. Marmalade, and The Repertory East Playhouse's Play It Again Sam, to name a few.
Madi also creates photographs and installations with the same dark and mysterious style that is often in her theatre work. She shows in Galleries around Los Angles including her solo show, Abandoned Subconscious, in the Lindhurst Gallery South.

In 2016, Madi and her husband, Luke, opened their own escape room, Cross Road Escape Games, in Anaheim, CA.  Madi and Luke created all three original games: The Hex Room, The Fun House, and The Psych Ward.  As the Creative Director, Madi has created mind blowing sets, one of a kind-unique experiences, and innovative game design. Cross Roads Escape Games is open all year long, and its an experience you don't want to miss!

What Is it All About?

Horror is the real. The realization of the killer before you, your parents dying, or the demon standing before you ready to collect your soul. Terror is the suspense. When there is a noise in the basement and you begin to slowly descend the stairs, or the strange bump you found on your back. The terror begins to sink in and the panic starts. Terror is the promise of death and horror is the promise fulfilled.
Terror and horror in art allows us to taunt death. I love mystery, and the unknown. I take the everyday reality of death and abstract it to a point where things are recognizable, yet not quite right. It becomes that uneasy feeling that happens when you go down the dark staircase.
Although my work is dark and twisted, it still has play and humor. The theatrical quality of contrast is a constant theme in my work. I mix the light with the dark, the terror with the humor. One without the other is like a horror movie without its comic relief. You have to love the funny guy because it makes it that much more painful when he always gets killed first.
